The WKU Softball Complex, built in conjunction with the soccer field, was part of a $1.2 million development to create one of the finest softball facilities in the conference and region. The softball project, which began in 1999 and was completed in just six months, involved laying the playing surface, the construction of both dugouts and a backstop, the outfield fence, bullpens and batting cages. A full-service scoreboard was added in right field in March 2000.
The Hilltoppers made their debut at the WKU Softball Field on February 23, 2000, with a doubleheader against Evansville, and earned their first home victory just three days later with a 4-2 defeat of in-state rival Eastern Kentucky. WKU went on to post a 16-5-1 record at the field that year.
Construction continued following the Tops’ inaugural season with the creation of the concession stand and press box facilities, located behind home plate. Lights were also added, giving the squad the ability to host night games for the first time during the 2000-01 school year. The addition of lights in time for the 2001 season allowed WKU Softball to host a pair of in-season tournaments, the WKU Spring Classic and the Lady Topper Classic, a trend that continued in future seasons. Also thanks to the addition of lights, start times for midweek games were able to be moved to later starts, giving the community a better opportunity to come out and support WKU Softball.
After the completion of the concession stand and press box facilities, which also includes fully-equipped restrooms, WKU installed 350 permanent chairback seats prior to the 2002 season. The facility also has the ability to add bleachers to increase seating capacity when necessary.
The addition of Parking Structure 3 beyond the left field fence of the facility has given fans an opportunity to view games from a unique perspective while also allowing for larger crowds. Construction was completed prior to the 2019 campaign and gives the option for a second ticketed entrance into the complex when necessary.
Prior to the 2020 campaign, the WKU Softball complex received a facelift that included new chair back seats, bullpen and batting cage upgrades along with numerous cosmetic detail additions.
The WKU Softball Complex was the host site for both the 2003 and 2005 Sun Belt Conference Tournaments. WKU was slated to host the 2020 Conference USA Tournament prior to its cancelation due to COVID-19 and will now host the 2021 event
